I’m sharing this homemade shampoo for hair growth in the hope that it will help those who want to strengthen their hair.
I have decided to try natural options because I’m losing hair by leaps and bounds and the older I get the more hair I lose. In my case it all started when I got pregnant with my son. Hormones, of course!
Since I really don’t want to be bold or wear a wig I’m looking for natural ways to grow my hair. I have been experimenting with homemade hair recipes in the hope that I can find something that works for me.
I don’t use shop-bought hair shampoos because they have harsh chemical ingredients that damage the hair and scalp in the long run.
So here it goes.

Note: Make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients used. Also consult your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking any medications.
Ingredients You Will Need
The bottle I used to store the shampoo is 250 ml. but I have some shampoo left so you could use a container of 350 ml or 2 bottles. Make smaller batches if you are not going to use a preservative and use within 2 weeks. Keep it in the fridge.
- 1 1/2 cups fresh stinging nettle infused water
- 3/4 cup organic Castile liquid soap
- 1/4 teaspoon castor, coconut oil or olive oil
- 5 drops rosemary oil
- 5 drops peppermint essential oil
- Broad spectrum preservative
I like to use lavender or rose essential oil to give the shampoo a nice scent but you can use any other essential oil you want. Sometimes the aromas don’t combine well together so pick wisely.
How to Make It and Use It:
1 – Get all the ingredients you need ready.
2 – Place the nettle in a heat resistant container and add boiling water until is all covered. Leave the nettle to infused the water for up to 24 hours.
3 – Strain the water. You can use a cheese cloth or a colander. I like to use a spoon to get all the goodness out of the nettle leaves.
4 – Pour in the Castile soap and mix.
5 – Add the carrier oil of your choice: coconut, castor or olive oil.
6 – Next add in the rosemary oil, peppermint oil and lavender/rose oil and mix thoroughly. Lastly add the preservative and mix well.
If you don’t want to use a preservative make a smaller amount and keep it in the fridge for one or two weeks.
7 – Transfer to a container or bottle with lid.
8 – Shake well before use.
9 – Take a small amount on your hands and on wet hair, lather the mixture and massage into the scalp for 2 minutes. Then leave it for another 3 minutes. Repeat if necessary.
10 – Rinse off thoroughly with lots of water and towel dry to get rid of excess water.
11 – Apply a natural or organic conditioner and rinse again.
12 – If you can, dry your hair naturally, as heat damage the hair.
13 – Once your hair is dried you can apply a leave-in conditioner if you have skipped step 11.
